Castellroig: the best cava in the world?

In the recent rankings of Spanish wines by The Wine Advocate (a.k.a. Robert Parker), the small family owned and operated winery and cava producer Castellroig (pronounced: cas-TEL-roch) earned the highest point score of all cavas reviewed: 91, for their Castellroig Reserva Familiar Sabaté i Coca.

The points given by Parker were awarded to two separate vintages (the 2001 and the 2003), making this cava (arguably) the best in the world.

Hi Steven,

I first tasted Castellroig wines in alimentaria this year. After that I went to Subirat last week to check out exactly how Marcel works.
He is a passionate man, loves his land and xarel.lo too.
He also produces a spectacular still white. An unoaked xarel.lo called terroja.
his first price Xarel.lo is also one of he best I have ever come through.

It seems that Penedes and Cava is back with many small estate willing to focus on quality. Have you tasted the Cava from can rafols dels Caus?

Cheers!

JLouis

PS : YouR presentation in Alimentaria was good too!

Thank you JLouis!

I met Marcel Sabaté a few years ago and he was a great host, showing me around the vineyards and winery, answering questions. He and his team really deserve the points that Parker has given their cavas.

I'm also glad you were able to attend my presentation at Alimentaria. If you have any follow-up comments on that, please let me know.
