Fermentation survey = interesting results for Spain
In a survey on wines-by-country perceptions recently conducted by Tom Wark at his Fermentations blog, there were some interesting results for Spanish wines:
Spain has the most intriguing wines of any country : nearly 60% of survey respondents (261 people) said they want to learn more about wines from Spain.
Also, Spain was cited as offering the best value in wines, BUT only 34% of respondents said that they buy Spanish wines "often" or "very often".
Conclusions:
Spain has an information gap. Maybe this is caused by language difficulties or that wineries are not effective in getting their message to the consumer.
Despite the high interest and excellent value perception, purchasing decisions are not following along. This could be due to difficulties in distribution, a lack of promotion, or the relative lack of consumer information making harder to for the consumer to have confidence in their purchasing decision.
All in all, the Spanish trade promotion organization, ICEX, and the individual wineries should be doing more to fill the information gap: more ads, education for distributors and retailers and wine events would be a few solutions. Once consumers know more, or are able to talk with knowledgable staff at the shop or restaurant, the decision to buy Spanish wine should be that much easier.
