Wines of the islands
The Balearic Islands of Mallorca, Ibiza and Menorca have been producing wines since the Roman era.
In the early 1990's, two D.O.s were established on the main island of Mallorca: D.O. Binissalem Mallorca and D.O. Pla i Llevant. While many of the major international grape varieties are present (notably Cabernet, Chardonnay, Merlot and Syrah) the region is home to several local varieties as well: Manto Negro (red), noted for its aromas of mature fruit and caramelized notes, Callet (red) and Prensal blanc (white) noted for its subtlety and balance.
2 of the leading wineries are: Bodegues Macía Batle and Vins Miquel Gelabert, whose Torrent Negre 2000 has been particularly acclaimed by Spanish critics.
Tourism is a major industry of the islands. The following shows various tour routes for local wineries, as well artesinal producers of cheeses and other foods from Illes Balears Qualitat.
